Global EV Outlook 2026 Chapter 6 Electric Vehicle Charging

1.Home Charging Access Gap by Region

Nordic Europe (Norway, Sweden): 90% EV owners can install home wallboxes; over 60% residents live in detached single-family houses with exclusive parking.

European Central Countries (Germany, France): 70%–78% EV home-charging access rate; national building codes require pre-wiring for charging in all new apartments.

China: Only about 50% of EV owners own private home chargers; 93% urban residents live in high-rise apartment buildings without fixed private parking. Another 33% rely on community shared AC chargers.

United States: 72% home charging access; single-family housing dominates suburban areas, while urban downtown apartment owners face installation barriers.

2.Global Subsidy Policies for Private Chargers

UK: Flat residents with off-street parking can apply for a maximum £500 home charger installation grant.

US: 30% tax credit for charger hardware and construction costs, capped at USD 1,000, valid until June 30, 2026.

Canada & New Zealand: Tiered subsidies based on household income, low-income families receive full installation cost coverage.

Kenya, India: Mandatory charging reserved parking ratio for new commercial & residential buildings (5%–20% of all parking spaces).
